I'm in Chicago, on the north side not far from the food pantry on Ridge. My roommate packed up and left two weeks ago without a word, and the rent and the electric both landed on me alone. I had a hearing for my SNAP benefits scheduled for Monday morning, and they want my documents sent certified mail or hand-delivered with a receipt, which I can't do because the CTA fare and the postage together run more than I have right now. I already called 311 and the Greater Chicago Food Depository, and both said they don't cover postage or transit for hearings. I tried the legal aid intake line but their next callback is after my date. What I'm asking for is $280, which covers the certified mail, the copies at the library, and getting myself there and back Monday. I'll bring the receipt and the stamped green card to show anyone who helps, and once my benefits are reinstated I'll put the first $40 toward the next person's postage here. I can verify everything with my hearing notice.

Sign in to view →I got hired on at a warehouse out off Geiger Boulevard through a temp agency, but they don't allow bags on the floor and my apartment is on the west side, so I've been hauling everything on the 21 bus every morning. Last Tuesday my court date for a traffic debt got moved to the same morning as my first paid shift, and if I miss that shift I lose the placement. There's a storage place near the downtown plaza that rents month-to-month lockers, and the smallest one would cover my boots, safety vest, and the duffel with my paperwork. Sixty-five dollars gets me two months, and the rest is for bus fare until my first actual paycheck lands on the 14th. I already asked the temp coordinator about an advance and they said no, and the Y over on Monroe doesn't have any day storage options. I can send a photo of the receipt the same day. Once I'm working steady I'll put the hundred back into the food bank donation jar at the downtown library, that's where I've been getting my groceries some weeks. Any help gets me to the 14th.

Sign in to view →I got laid off from the Amazon warehouse on Highway 2 back in November, and since then it's been one thing after another. My car died right before Christmas, so I've been borrowing my sister's Corolla when she's off work, which isn't often. I have three interviews lined up in the next ten days, two of them out in the Valley and one at the Kaiser clinic, and I need to look decent for them. What I'm asking for is $300: about $120 for gas to get to those interviews and back, and the rest for laundry. We've been washing everything in the tub with dish soap for weeks now, and my daughter's school clothes are getting that gray look. The laundromat by the industrial park off Freya is the closest one I can get to. I already tried the St. Vincent de Paul on Trent and they helped with a food box but said their assistance funds were tapped out until February. I also called 211 twice and got put on hold for over an hour each time. If someone can help with this, I'll do my best to get one of these jobs and pay it back or pass it on to somebody else here who needs it. I can send photos of the gas receipts and the laundry card balance once I get it.

Sign in to view →My hours got cut to nothing three weeks ago when ValleyRide restructured the dispatch office, and my first unemployment payment is still stuck in adjudication. I filed on the 8th and the woman on the phone said ten to fourteen business days, which would put it right around the end of the month. I've stretched what was left in checking as far as it goes, sold my bike, and hit the food bank on Americana twice, but they don't carry pet food and I'm not going to let my dogs go hungry while I wait. I need about $230 to cover a big bag of kibble, a case of wet food, and a refill of the joint supplement for my older shepherd, plus a bag of the small-breed formula for the terrier mix. I can pick up from any store around the transit hub or meet you somewhere on the bench. Once my back pay lands I'll return the favor to whoever helps me, in cash or by picking up the same order for the next person who posts here. I can show my claim confirmation if anyone wants to see it before pitching in.

Sign in to view →I had steady overtime at the hospital until a reorg in early February wiped it out, and the paycheck that used to cover everything barely covers rent now. My benefits hearing is Monday morning at the office downtown, and I can't afford to miss it. The problem is my two kids: their sitter near the hospital district raised her rate, and I'm about $70 short of covering her for the hearing plus four days of bus passes to get to interviews I've lined up for Tuesday and Thursday. I already asked the sitter if I could pay her back Friday, and she said she's been burned before, so it's cash up front. I called the 211 line and a couple of churches, but the closest appointment for emergency help is after my hearing date. Anything you can chip in goes straight to the sitter and to the People Mover pass, and I'll send you the receipt photos. Once I'm working again I want to put the same amount back into this community for the next person in this spot.

Sign in to view →I got hired at the Riverside blocks distribution center off Lombard, swing shift, and orientation is supposed to be the 22nd. The offer is conditional on a background check through a third-party company and they want $320 up front before they'll run it. I don't have it. I was counting on a mobile deposit of my final check from the warehouse I got laid off from in January, but the bank put a hold on it for eight business days and it won't clear until the 26th, which is past when the check needs to be paid. I tried asking the screening company if they'd bill me after my first paycheck and they said no. I sold my bike and my PlayStation already, that got me to $90. A payday place on 82nd quoted me an APR I couldn't live with. What I need is the $320 so the check can run this week and I can start on time. I'll send a screenshot of the payment confirmation and then the orientation email the moment it comes through, and I'll pay it back the first Friday after I get paid, in full. I've been on this forum reading for two months and never posted until now.

Sign in to view →I started a new job at a warehouse out on the northeast side two weeks ago after being laid off from my old job in March. The pay is weekly but my first full check doesn't hit until the 1st, and I have $11.43 in my account right now. My car is also on its last legs and I've been borrowing my sister's to get to interviews and now to work, but I can't ask her for grocery money on top of that. I already went to the food pantry at the community center on my side of town but they're only open Tuesdays and I missed it this week. I've called 211 and left a message but haven't heard back. What I need is about $70 to get through the next several days: bread, eggs, milk, some canned stuff, peanut butter, rice, and gas to get to work. I can send a screenshot of my bank balance and my work schedule to show I'm not making this up. I'll pay it forward the first week of next month once I'm caught up, either cash or by covering someone else's grocery run here. Anything helps, even part of it.

Sign in to view →I cracked a molar on a stale granola bar two weeks ago and kept telling myself it would calm down. It didn't. By Monday the whole left side of my jaw was swollen and I couldn't chew anything that wasn't soup. I went to a urgent dental place on Charleston near the workforce center, and they said the tooth has to come out and quoted me $110 for the deposit to get on the schedule. My unemployment deposit was supposed to hit Tuesday but there's a pending issue on my claim now, so it's delayed and I have no idea when it clears. I already called 211 and tried the dental school clinic, but their next opening for an extraction is mid-December and I can't keep going like this. I sold my old bike for forty bucks and used that for groceries. If someone can cover the $110 I'll go the same day to pay it, and I'll bring back the receipt. My sister said she can spot me half when she gets paid on the 3rd, so I'd pass that half along to whoever helps here, or send it to the next person on this board who needs it.

Sign in to view →Two weeks ago my child support withholding jumped from $140 to $310 a month because my ex's income changed, and the notice came the same week my hours at the Murray warehouse got cut to three shifts. I'm making it work with the food pantry over on 1300 South, but I can't see well enough to pass the forklift recertification, and that's the whole reason I have any shifts at all. I sat down with a lady at the workforce services office downtown and she gave me a voucher list, but the soonest eye exam opening they had was mid-December. I need $180 to cover the exam and the cheapest frames they carry at the place on State Street. I've already sold my spare tire and skipped the phone bill, so there's nothing left to squeeze. If someone can help, I'll take the receipt from the appointment and post a photo of it, then put $20 a week back into a cash envelope so I can pass it on to whoever's next in line here. Any amount, even part, gets me closer.

Sign in to view →I got laid off from the overnight stocking crew at the Kroger on Gwinnett in early February, and my last check went almost entirely to rent. I have a 9-year-old and a 3-year-old at home, and we've been leaning on the food pantry at White Bluff United Methodist, but they only distribute twice a month and I missed the last window because I was at a mandatory reemployment appointment. SNAP gave me $94 for March, which is honestly less than I expected, and it was gone in about nine days. I need $170 to get us through until the 14th, when my benefit review is scheduled. I'll use it at the Walmart on Montgomery Crossroad for rice, beans, eggs, milk, frozen vegetables, and a bag of apples, nothing fancy. I've already sold my plasma once this month and borrowed $40 from my sister, who's a nursing assistant and doesn't have much either. I can show the receipt and the SNAP card statement to whoever helps. Once my hearing comes through and back pay hits, I'll put the same amount back into this group for the next family.
