Unemployment benefits checklist

A completion-oriented checklist for US Unemployment Insurance - aligned with how WUUUH seeds response checklists and deadlines after onboarding.

Rules vary by state and change. Always follow your state workforce agency. This guide is not a guarantee of eligibility or payment.
  1. 1. Confirm which agency covers you

Unemployment Insurance is state-run in the US. Use your state labor/workforce site - WUUUH assistance matching points at official sources, not third-party “file for you” ads.

  2. 2. File as soon as you are eligible

Waiting a week can cost a week of benefits. If you are preparing for a layoff, bookmark the filing path before your last day.

  3. 3. Gather the usual documents

Government ID, Social Security number, last employer details, recent pay stubs, and any layoff/WARN notice. Store only what you need in a vault after you join.

  4. 4. Calendar weekly certifications

Missed certifications are a common reason payments stop. Add the recurring deadline to a calendar (WUUUH members can export .ics from Deadlines).

  5. 5. Report work and income accurately

Part-time or gig earnings usually must be reported in the week earned. When you return to work, keep hardship holds until the first paycheck clears - then report status changes.

  6. 6. Appeal denials with a paper trail

If denied, note the deadline on the determination letter. Keep copies of submissions. Members can use appeal prep tools after signup; free users should still use official appeal instructions.
