Your first week after a layoff

A short list you can actually finish, not a 40-tab rabbit hole. Do these before you start polishing your resume.

  1. File or confirm unemployment insurance (deadlines are strict).
  2. Download pay stubs, benefits summary, and offer/separation letters while access lasts.
  3. List essential bills for the next 30 days - rent, utilities, insurance, food, transport.
  4. Call 211 for local food and utility help if cash is thin this week.
  5. Tell one person you trust about your plan. Keep your personal email off public posts.
  6. Open Help Me Now or the income-loss preview if you want to know what to do first.
