What will you actually keep from your severance?

See the check amount after withholding, the tax you really owe, and whether you'll get money back or owe more when you file. No account, nothing stored.

Estimates use 2026 federal brackets, the standard deduction and the flat state rate you enter. They ignore credits, itemized deductions and local taxes. This is arithmetic, not tax advice. Check big decisions with a tax professional or a free VITA site.

Severance tax questions

Why is my severance check taxed so heavily?
Employers usually treat severance as supplemental wages and withhold a flat 22% federal rate, plus 7.65% for Social Security and Medicare and any state withholding. Withholding is a prepayment, not the final bill. Your real tax depends on your whole year's income.
Will I get some of it back?
If your income for the year ends up in the 10% or 12% bracket (common after a mid-year layoff), the 22% withheld can be more than you owe and the difference comes back as a refund. If you're in the 24% bracket or higher, 22% under-withholds and you should set money aside.
Does taking severance in January really save tax?
It can when this year's income is high and next year's will be lower, because the payout lands in lower brackets. You can only ask, since the employer decides the payment date, and you'll need to weigh getting the cash later against the savings.
Does severance affect unemployment benefits?
It depends on the state. Some reduce or delay weekly benefits while you receive severance, especially salary continuation; others ignore lump sums. Check your state's rules before you agree to a payment schedule.
