Paid it forward today (update)

I referred a former colleague for a role at my new company. I am in San Diego, in case local advice matters. I was nervous but it went well. Thank you for the advice that got me here.

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it last year, and it settled down once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
