Whole sector shrinking, should I change fields? (Birmingham)

Many of the people I know in my field were laid off this year, including me as an IT help-desk technician. I would rather hear the honest version than the polite one. The postings I see are fewer and ask for more. How did you choose?

A short certificate helped me more than a new degree would have. Check what local colleges offer.
