Whole sector shrinking, should I change fields? - any advice?

Three companies in Buffalo cut staff in the same month. This is my first time dealing with any of this. I have transferable skills but no direct experience elsewhere. Which areas are hiring?

Look at job postings to see which skills repeat, then fill the gap. That gave me a direction.
