Should I negotiate my severance?

I was offered 16 weeks of severance after 16 years as a welding apprentice, and I have a few days to sign. There are 16 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. I do not want to leave money on the table. Did anyone negotiate and succeed?

An hour with an employment lawyer cost me a small fee and made me feel much safer about signing.
