Making savings last after losing my job - what worked for you?

We are a household of 7 and need to cut costs quickly. I am nervous about the credit card minimums. What helped the most?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it 5 months ago, and it got easier once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
