Making savings last after losing my job - what worked for you?

I have 6 months of savings and I am trying to stretch them after being let go as a teaching assistant. I have read a lot of threads here and could not find my exact situation. Rent and the car are the biggest costs. Did any lender work with you?

A simple budget with three columns, fixed, flexible and optional, made decisions faster.

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
