Making savings last after losing my job (Boston)

We are a household of 7 and need to cut costs quickly. I am in Boston, in case local advice matters. Rent and the car are the biggest costs. Did any lender work with you?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
