Just got laid off, what should I do first? - 8 months and counting

I was let go as a medical assistant this week and I am still in shock. I am in St. Louis, in case local advice matters. I have a box of my things and a short letter about benefits.

File for unemployment right away. Do not wait for severance decisions. The date you file can matter.

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it 8 months ago, and it got easier once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
