Just got laid off, what should I do first? - 14 months and counting

I lost my job as a data-entry clerk and I am not sure what to do first. Any experience at all would help. I have a few weeks of savings and a rent payment due. What did you do in the first week?

File for unemployment right away. Do not wait for severance decisions. The date you file can matter.

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it last year, and it settled down once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
