Industry layoffs, what are people doing? (update)

Three companies in San Diego cut staff in the same month. There are 14 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. The postings I see are fewer and ask for more. How did you choose?

Look at job postings to see which skills repeat, then fill the gap. That gave me a direction.
