Industry layoffs, what are people doing? - any advice?

Many of the people I know in my field were laid off this year, including me as a customer-service rep. I have transferable skills but no direct experience elsewhere. How did you choose?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
