Industry layoffs, what are people doing? - any advice?

Three companies in Honolulu cut staff in the same month. Any experience at all would help. I have transferable skills but no direct experience elsewhere. How did you choose?

A short certificate helped me more than a new degree would have. Check what local colleges offer.
