How do I explain a layoff in interviews? - 8 months and counting

They always ask why I left, and I freeze. I am in Providence, in case local advice matters. I also do not want to seem like a risk. What do you say?

Say it plainly and move on to what you can do. Interviewers usually move on if you do.

I keep it to two sentences: the company cut my team, and here is what I am proud of and what I am looking for next.
