How do I explain a layoff in interviews? - 5 months and counting

They always ask why I left, and I freeze. Any experience at all would help. I also do not want to seem like a risk. Do you mention numbers?

Practise it out loud with a friend. Mine felt natural after the third try.

If a company has been in the news for layoffs, you can mention that. Often the interviewer already knows.
