How do I explain a layoff in interviews? - 10 months and counting

They always ask why I left, and I freeze. It has been a long 10 weeks. I do not want to blame the company. Do you mention numbers?

If a company has been in the news for layoffs, you can mention that. Often the interviewer already knows.
