Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea? (Wichita)

I was laid off 5 weeks ago and have not told my family because I do not want them to worry. I have read a lot of threads here and could not find my exact situation. I feel ashamed even though the company cut a whole team. Did it get easier afterwards?

Do not wait until a bill surprises them. The longer it goes, the harder it gets.
