Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea? - what worked for you?

I was laid off 5 weeks ago and have not told my family because I do not want them to worry. I am in Charlotte, in case local advice matters. I want a plan before I speak.

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
