Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea? (update)

My spouse does not know yet that I was let go as a teaching assistant. Thank you in advance. I feel ashamed even though the company cut a whole team. Did it get easier afterwards?

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it 5 months ago, and it got easier once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
