Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea? (update)

My spouse does not know yet that I was let go as a welding apprentice. There are 4 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. I feel ashamed even though the company cut a whole team. How did you handle it?

Do not wait until a bill surprises them. The longer it goes, the harder it gets.
