Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea? (update)

I was laid off 20 weeks ago and have not told my family because I do not want them to worry. I feel ashamed even though the company cut a whole team.

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.

Shame is common after a layoff even when it is not your fault. Saying it out loud to one person first helped me.
