Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea? (Salt Lake City)

I was laid off 26 weeks ago and have not told my family because I do not want them to worry. I would rather hear the honest version than the polite one. I feel ashamed even though the company cut a whole team. How did you handle it?

Do not wait until a bill surprises them. The longer it goes, the harder it gets.
