Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea?

I was laid off 26 weeks ago and have not told my family because I do not want them to worry. I would rather hear the honest version than the polite one. I want a plan before I speak. Did it get easier afterwards?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.
