Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea? (Chicago)

I was laid off 16 weeks ago and have not told my family because I do not want them to worry. It has been weighing on me all week. I want a plan before I speak. How did you handle it?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
