Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea? - any advice?

My spouse does not know yet that I was let go as a welding apprentice. I want a plan before I speak. How did you handle it?

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it 13 months ago, and it got easier once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
