Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea? - any advice?

I was laid off 9 weeks ago and have not told my family because I do not want them to worry. I would rather hear the honest version than the polite one. I want a plan before I speak. How did you handle it?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.
