Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea? - any advice?

I was laid off 24 weeks ago and have not told my family because I do not want them to worry. Any experience at all would help. I feel ashamed even though the company cut a whole team. How did you handle it?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
