Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea? - any advice?

I was laid off 2 weeks ago and have not told my family because I do not want them to worry. Any experience at all would help. I want a plan before I speak. How did you handle it?

Shame is common after a layoff even when it is not your fault. Saying it out loud to one person first helped me.

Kids often pick up more than you think. A short, calm explanation helped mine feel secure.
