Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea? - any advice?

I was laid off 18 weeks ago and have not told my family because I do not want them to worry. I am in Albuquerque, in case local advice matters. I feel ashamed even though the company cut a whole team. How did you handle it?

Shame is common after a layoff even when it is not your fault. Saying it out loud to one person first helped me.
