Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea? after 8 years as an IT help-desk technician

My spouse does not know yet that I was let go as an IT help-desk technician. I am in Sacramento, in case local advice matters. Bills are coming up and I cannot keep this quiet. How did you handle it?

Shame is common after a layoff even when it is not your fault. Saying it out loud to one person first helped me.
