Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea? after 18 years as an office manager

I was laid off 3 weeks ago and have not told my family because I do not want them to worry. I have been trying to stay organised about it. I want a plan before I speak. Did it get easier afterwards?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.
