Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea? after 17 years as a mechanic

I was laid off 11 weeks ago and have not told my family because I do not want them to worry. I feel ashamed even though the company cut a whole team. Did it get easier afterwards?

Do not wait until a bill surprises them. The longer it goes, the harder it gets.
