Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea?

I have been leaving the house at the same time each day so my kids do not notice. I am in Salt Lake City, in case local advice matters. I feel ashamed even though the company cut a whole team. How did you handle it?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
