Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea?

My spouse does not know yet that I was let go as an accounts payable clerk. There are 9 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. I feel ashamed even though the company cut a whole team. How did you handle it?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
