Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea?

My spouse does not know yet that I was let go as a teaching assistant. There are 11 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. I want a plan before I speak. What did you say?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.

Shame is common after a layoff even when it is not your fault. Saying it out loud to one person first helped me.
