Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea?

My spouse does not know yet that I was let go as a bank teller. This is my first time dealing with any of this. I want a plan before I speak. How did you handle it?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
