Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea?

I was laid off 16 weeks ago and have not told my family because I do not want them to worry. I worked as a welding apprentice before this. I feel ashamed even though the company cut a whole team. Did it get easier afterwards?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.
