Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea? - 14 months and counting

I was laid off 3 weeks ago and have not told my family because I do not want them to worry. Any experience at all would help. I feel ashamed even though the company cut a whole team.

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.
