Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea? - 10 months and counting

My spouse does not know yet that I was let go as a dental hygienist. There are 4 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. I want a plan before I speak. How did you handle it?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
