Hiding a layoff from the family, bad idea?

I was laid off 20 weeks ago and have not told my family because I do not want them to worry. I do not usually post, so bear with me. I feel ashamed even though the company cut a whole team. How did you handle it?

Kids often pick up more than you think. A short, calm explanation helped mine feel secure.

Shame is common after a layoff even when it is not your fault. Saying it out loud to one person first helped me.
