Budget after a layoff: what did you cut first? - what worked for you?

We are a household of 10 and need to cut costs quickly. This is my first time dealing with any of this. Rent and the car are the biggest costs.

I called the landlord and the card company early. Both offered a short payment plan, which I did not expect.
