Budget after a layoff: what did you cut first? - any advice?

We are a household of 6 and need to cut costs quickly. I do not usually post, so bear with me. Rent and the car are the biggest costs.

Ask your utility about hardship programmes. Mine knocked a bit off my bill for several months.

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it 5 months ago, and it settled down once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
