Budget after a layoff: what did you cut first?

I have 14 months of savings and I am trying to stretch them after being let go as a copywriter. I am in Kansas City, in case local advice matters. Rent and the car are the biggest costs.

Ask your utility about hardship programmes. Mine knocked a bit off my bill for several months.

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.
