Budget after a layoff: what did you cut first? - 11 months and counting

We are a household of 14 and need to cut costs quickly. I am in Buffalo, in case local advice matters. Rent and the car are the biggest costs. What helped the most?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.
