Word-of-mouth leads in Portland - what worked for you?

Two small Portland employers told me they are hiring but have not posted yet. I am in Portland, in case local advice matters. They prefer people who can start within a couple of weeks. Does anyone have similar leads?

Keep a list of who you contacted and when. It makes follow-ups easy.

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it 5 months ago, and it settled down once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
