Word-of-mouth leads in Pittsburgh - what worked for you?

I asked around at a community meeting and got three leads. Any experience at all would help. They prefer people who can start within a couple of weeks. Should I visit in person?

Visiting in person worked for a trades job. For office jobs, email was better.

Keep a list of who you contacted and when. It makes follow-ups easy.
