Word-of-mouth leads in Fresno - what worked for you?

Two small Fresno employers told me they are hiring but have not posted yet. I would rather hear the honest version than the polite one. They prefer people who can start within a couple of weeks. Does anyone have similar leads?

Visiting in person worked for a trades job. For office jobs, email was better.
